I am Lyn Franks and I am running for the Alaska State Legislature in House District 15, which includes NE Muldoon and west JBER. I care about our community and the people in it. Our state is facing serious obstacles, including the future of the PFD and cuts by the governor to critical services like public safety, educational funding, state spending and, of course, climate change. This district desperately needs a representative who understands the neighborhood’s needs and the real problems all Alaskans are facing.

I've been in Alaska since 1988. My then husband made a service transfer from the Army to the Public Health Service at ANMC. Together we raised three wonderful children who now have children of their own. As a legislator, I will bring a realistic perspective to important services that our active duty personnel, veterans, spouses, and their families depend upon.

As an adjunct history instructor at UAA and also an educator in the Anchorage School District, I know from experience that the governor's budget cuts are damaging our teachers, our families, our children, and our diverse community. We need to strengthen, not abandon, as Governor Dunleavy and Representative LeDoux have done, the promise of public education.

The majority of the people in the district also want to see some effort from the Dunleavy administration on crime prevention. It's no secret that the Governor's budget cuts have hamstrung the state's ability to investigate and prosecute criminals in a timely manner.

And we all know these budget cuts are connected to the $1.2B in tax credits they give to the oil companies every year—which hurts our Permanent Fund Dividend checks and our standard of living. Oil and gas companies need to pay their fair share.

As the great-great granddaughter of a post-civil war North Carolina state legislator —a southerner who fought to save the Union—and the great granddaughter of Czechoslovakian immigrants who, with nothing, sailed to America in the late 1880s seeking opportunity, I’ve inherited their tenacity, love of freedom, and hope for a better future.

I will work with other stakeholders to expand new, sustainable energy industries that Alaska will need in the very near future. This issue isn’t just about energy, either—it’s about JOBS!
